Use Your Personality, Interests, and Skill Sets To Determine Your Best Education Program

Finding The Right Major Does Not Have To Be Stressful

Understanding who you are and focusing on what you love can help you make the right choice. For some students, choosing a college major is easy, while for others, this process causes a state of panic. If you find yourself becoming stressed out, take a deep breath and relax. Many times, the majority of students change their major throughout their college careers anyway, so it is okay if you begin college, not knowing what career outlook you want to choose.

You already know that a college and university education is important for your future. Therefore, do not put your education on hold, because you have not decided on the ultimate path you want to choose. Instead, start with your basic classes and follow these steps, before settling on a specific college or university education program.

Step One: Self-Assessment

A good way to begin choosing an education program is by taking the time for self-assessment. What are your interests? What is your personality like? What atmospheres motivate you the most? What types of jobs or careers appeal to you? If you ask yourself these questions and still cannot get the answers, take a standardized test, such as a self-assessment test. You can find many self-assessment tests online or locate them through your college advisor.

Step Two: Examine Your Abilities

Remember to stop and ask yourself some questions concerning your abilities. What are your strengths? In which areas do you need improvement? What are you good at? Research the classes you took during your high-school years. Are there particular courses at which you excelled? If you liked the subjects you were good in, use that fact as a jumping-off point and proceed to research your career.

Step Three: Pinpoint What Motivates You

What do you value most when it comes to work? Everyone has their own driving force, which motivates them. Some students are motivated by job opportunities that allow them to help people. Others are motivated by stability and status. So, figure out what makes you tick, and use that to guide you when selecting a college education program.

Step Four: Look At Your Career Options

Now that you have a better understanding of whom you are as a person and where your interests lie, it is time to examine your career options. Take a look at what the job market has to offer. And, go on the Internet and explore a career guide.  Pick out careers that seem interesting to you. Then figure out if that constitutes a career that you can handle, or want to explore. For example, if you dislike school, choosing to become a doctor probably would not be your wisest choice. Remember that taking standardized tests can assist you in isolating your specific needs, which then will help you to choose an ultimate career.

Step Five: Narrow Down Your Options

Once you have a list of options, narrow these down to the most interesting and exciting careers. Mull over this information for a reasonable period of time.  Then, pick the career that sounds like the most appealing one. If you are pleased with your choice, then you are ready to settle on an education program that will ensure your achieving the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in a particular industry.

Additional Educational  Resources To Use

Some additional resources, of which you should take advantage, while deciding on an education program, are:

  • College course catalogs
  • Classmates
  • Professors
  • Alumni
  • Family and friends
  • College career centers

All of these educational resources can serve as guides when it comes to settling on a college and university education and career path. If you take advantage of all of these resources, and stay true to whom you are and what you want in life, the choice of a college education program will be easy and secure.
