Government Grants For College

Looking Into Federal College Scholarship Grants

Federal college scholarship grants are one of the most ideal ways to get help in paying for college. Grants can be used at any accredited college and do not have to be repaid. Federal college scholarship grants were put in place to make education affordable for every citizen. These federal aid awards are not based on religion, race, or gender. Rather, they are awarded based on the financial need of the student and are usually renewable each year. Various types of grants are available from the government to assist students with tuition, fees, books, and other related educational costs.

Pell Grants

Federal Pell Grants are college scholarship grants that are given to undergraduate students who demonstrate a serious financial need. The amount of a Pell Grant is determined by the cost of tuition at your school of choice, the expected family contribution, and the maximum grant amount available. This money is given directly to your school by the federal government. They will then apply the funds to your account and issue you a check for any leftover money, to be used for other educational expenses.

Supplemental Grants

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, or FSEOG, is an additional award, similar to the Pell Grant. However, each school only receives a certain amount of funding from this program. These college scholarship grants are determined by the school’s financial aid office and are given to the students with the lowest expected family contribution. As with Federal Pell Grants, the financial aid office will see that your grant is paid to your account.

State Government Grants

Every state has its own set of college scholarship grants. These are usually reserved for students who are residents of a particular state and choose a college that is within their home state. Most of these grants are based on financial need; however, some grants may combine need with academics. They will also be distributed to your college’s financial aid office for disbursement.

In order to get most federal grants, a student and his or her parents must submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) directly to the federal government. Once this has been reviewed by the government, the information will be shared with the state and school, for consideration within other grant programs. Students will then receive an award letter with information about what grants they have received, from each of the funding sources that have issued money to them. Information will then be given on when and how the money is to be disbursed by the school, allowing for financial planning for the academic year.
