College Cost Reduction Techniques

Everyone Benefits From College Cost Reduction

It is common knowledge that those people with college degrees will usually make more money in their lifetime than those who never obtain a higher education. Still, this fact does not make that initial investment in a college education any easier to finance. If you find that you need additional help beyond standard loans, college scholarship grants, and scholarships, there are other ways to cut your education costs. Cost reduction for a college education begins at the high school level and can continue after admission. So, start looking into other loan programs as early as you possibly can.

Dual Enrollment

Many high schools have agreements with local colleges to allow dual enrollment of students. Dual enrollment allows students to earn college credits while still in high school. Many times, these programs are state funded and are of no additional cost to students. Some classes will take place at the high school level, while others will take place on-campus at the college. You will likely have to purchase your own books for these courses, but the credits are transferable toward your college degree.

Advanced Placement (AP) Credits

Another solution to college cost reduction issues is to earn AP or Advanced Placement credits while still in high school. These fast-paced, high-intensity courses allow students to experience college level coursework, while remaining at their high schools. Once the course is completed, the student will then be given an exam to gauge their understanding of the learned materials. Those students who attain high enough scores will be given credit or advanced standing at certain colleges and universities.

CLEP/DSST Testing

College Level Examination Programs and DANTES Subject Standardized Tests are other ways to earn college credits without spending the time and money involved in actual college coursework. These testing programs are not free; however, they will cost less than the tuition for a single college course, in most cases. If you feel as if you have enough knowledge on a subject to successfully test high in a course, this option can save you a lot of money.

Stay In-State Cost Reduction

Though the thought of spreading your wings and attending a college away from your home and family may sound exciting, it can cost a lot more money than staying in-state. Staying at a college in your home state is one way to save money.  In fact, it can save you thousands of dollars in tuition costs each year. Additionally, if you choose an in-state college that is close to home, you can also save on other expenses, such as room and board and transportation.

Look Into Reciprocity

Usually attending an out-of-state college will cost substantially more than staying in your home state. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. Some states have reciprocity agreements with surrounding states, to allow in-state tuition rates or, at least, a reduction in the out-of-state rate to students. Typically, these are at state- funded colleges and universities and may have other restrictions attached. Applications for reciprocity are usually dealt with after a student is admitted.
